REMINDER Invitation to journalists: New report on care homes for older Europeans, launch event in Dublin, 28 November
Eurofound will launch its new report on care homes for older Europeans at a special event on Tuesday 28 November 2017 in Europe House, Dublin.
The event will be opened by Mr Jim Daly, Irish Minister of State at the Department of Health with special responsibility for Mental Health and Older People, and will gather policy makers, academics, practitioners, and representatives from national authorities and European institutions in order to discuss fresh research findings on the provision of services in care homes for older people.
These new findings show the extent to which private providers are expanding and/or replacing the public sector in the delivery of nursing homes and residential care centres for older people. This is a vital issue at a time when people across Europe are living longer and there is an increasing need for affordable, high quality care to support the ageing population.
The report examines services in the public and private sectors, how they differ in what they provide, the experience of staff, and problems faced by the staff/bed ratio to service users. It shows that throughout Europe, private care homes are growing at a faster rate than public ones and are increasingly dominating the market. In Ireland, for example, there has been a marked increase in the number of private beds, and a decline in the number of public beds available, resulting in Ireland having one of the highest percentages of private provision care homes in Europe.
