Press alert: Eurofound to present to Irish Parliament’s Joint Committee on EU Affairs

Eurofound Director Juan Menéndez-Valdés will present to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs at 14:00 GMT on Wednesday 12 December. The presentation will look at Ireland-specific data from the European Quality of Life Survey and European Working Conditions Survey.

There will be a specific focus on areas where Ireland performs well compared to the EU average, particularly in relation to optimism and civic engagement, as well as areas identified as more challenging, such as access to affordable childcare and (social) housing.

As highlighted in the 2018 country-specific recommendations for Ireland, these issues are key to a timely and effective implementation of the National Development Plan. The presentation will also make links to the European Pillar of Social Rights and draw attention to quality of public services and trust in institutions in Ireland.

The Ireland specific data presented to the Committee will also form the basis of a Citizen’s Dialogue on ‘Quality of Life in Europe – How does Ireland measures up?’ - organised by the European Commission in Ireland and Eurofound. The event will take place in Europe House in Dublin on Thursday 13 December.

Europe’s economic recovery continues in times of political instability

Europe is showing visible signs of progress; in most countries, labour markets are healthier than they have been in a decade, with more people active and in work than ever before, while social exclusion is declining. However, it is also a continent in transition, where an imbalance in opportunities for prosperity and quality of life directly determines to what extent you have felt this recovery.

Europe – a world-class place to live and work?

The results from the most recent European Quality of Life Survey show overall progress in the areas of quality of life, quality of society and quality of public services. We have seen improvements for many, although from low points following the economic crisis.
