Publication Alert: EQLS overview report

The overview report for the latest European Quality of Life Survey is now online.

The findings indicate that differences between countries on many aspects are still prevalent – but with more nuanced narratives. Each Member State exhibits certain strengths in particular aspects of well-being, but multiple disadvantages are still more pronounced in some societies than in others; and in all countries significant social inequalities persist.

This overview report presents the findings for the EU Member States. It uses information from previous survey rounds, as well as other research, to look at trends in quality of life against a background of the changing social and economic profile of European societies. Ten years after the global economic crisis, it examines well-being and quality of life broadly, to include quality of society and public services.

Nearly 37,000 people in 33 European countries were interviewed in the last quarter of 2016 for the fourth wave of the European Quality of Life Survey.

Quality of life improving in Europe, but progress undermined by persisting inequalities and growing uncertainty

Results from Eurofound’s 2016 European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) show general progress in the three key areas - quality of life, quality of society and quality of public services. Nevertheless, there remain signs of persisting inequalities and rising uncertainties in some areas with particular differences apparent between countries, gender, age and income groups.

Feelings of insecurity widespread in Europe

Feelings of insecurity in several dimensions of life are widespread in the EU, even among those who are materially well-off. Only 1% of the EU population enjoys the highest level of security in the combined areas of personal security and security in housing, healthcare, employment and old-age income.

Some improvements in the lives of people with disabilities but disadvantage remains

There has been an overall improvement in the employment and social situation of people with disabilities in the EU, with more people with disabilities in employment and actively participating in society in 2016 than 2011. However, disabled people are still significantly less likely to be in employment than people without disabilities, and they remain among the most disadvantaged groups in Europe.

Optimism about the future is up in the EU, but in some countries there are concerns for younger generations

People surveyed about their optimism for the future in Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) were more optimistic about their own future in 2016 than they had been about the future in general in 2011. This growth in optimism can partly be attributed to the improved economic situation in Europe since 2011.

Europe – a world-class place to live and work?

The results from the most recent European Quality of Life Survey show overall progress in the areas of quality of life, quality of society and quality of public services. We have seen improvements for many, although from low points following the economic crisis.
