Despite differences in economic structure, labour markets and development, a pioneering study of the working conditions and job quality of 1.2 billion workers finds common concerns and challenges across 41 countries and four continents, according to a new report from the International Labour Organization and Eurofound.

Eurofound has launched its new work programme for 2017 to 2020. This document sets out the activities the Agency plans to undertake in the next four years to support European decision-makers in formulating effective policies for the improvement of quality of life and work in a fair and competitive Europe during this challenging period.

Eurofound’s analysis of the labour market in Europe shows that just over four out of ten (41%) of employees in the EU work in direct contact with clients, customers, users, patients or other service recipients. This ‘interactive service work’ is female dominated, with women accounting for 61% of workers.

The new von der Leyen Commission took office on 1 December 2019. First-generation migrants more likely to have third-level education

First-generation migrants in the EU are significantly more likely to have attained tertiary qualifications than natives and second-generation migrants. However, first-generation migrant workers are also more likely to have primary education only, compared to the native population. This shows that educational attainment is more polarised.

After more than 60 years of European policy on the equal treatment of women and men, men still outnumber women in management positions by almost two to one. The women who do make it into management are more likely to be in non-supervising management roles where they manage operational responsibilities but not staff, and the minority that do manage staff are more likely to be managing other women.
